“With our free and low-threshold educational offer on openHPI, we basically want to reach everyone who uses the Internet,” assures Prof. Christoph Meinel, head of the Department of Internet Technologies and Systems and one of the managing directors of the institute. When selecting topics, care is taken to always include enough beginner courses with high relevance and topicality in the program. If you want, you can complete the courses with examination and certificate and thus prove your acquired latest knowledge, for example in an application.

Free online courses start in January

The annual program starts on January 25 with a special course on the analysis of large amounts of data and the use of artificial intelligence. In English, it teaches students and scientists in particular how simple problems in this field can be solved by means of probability calculation. “AI and machine learning are trending topics that are enjoying growing popularity among openHPI users,” reports e-learning expert Meinel. Further free online courses are therefore being planned. The HPI professor also sees quantum technology as another key technology that could revolutionize the development of many industries in just a few years.

“That’s why we offer a diverse accompanying program at openHPI, with which interested parties can acquire a basic understanding of quantum algorithms or go deeper into the matter,” emphasizes Meinel. Common programming languages easily explained by free online courses

The openHPI learning platform will also offer attractive free online courses to school classes and the young-at-heart programming enthusiasts in 2023. Also on the program are the popular beginner offers “Object-oriented programming in Java” and “Learning programming with Python” in the school version. “Students can look forward to a playful introduction to the popular programming languages,” assures computer science professor Meinel.

The courses will be available from 27 February and are designed in such a way that they can be easily integrated into computer science lessons. Starting September 13, HPI scientist Dr. Timo Kötzing will offer a preliminary course in mathematics on openHPI, which is primarily aimed at anyone who wants to study computer science. “In this free course, we will review the basics of mathematics that are essential for studying computer science,” says the course instructor. In addition to number ranges and arithmetic with unknowns, logarithms and exponentiation as well as differential and integral calculus will be part of the four-week course. Course on Knowledge Graphs as the Backbone of Modern Information Systems

In autumn 2023, the openHPI learning platform will offer a new course on an area that is closely intertwined with the topic of AI: Knowledge Graphs. To put it simply, these are database systems on the Internet that collect many frequently entered search words and display associated content. The best known is probably the Knowledge Graph of the search engine provider Google.

With its help, in addition to the actual results of the request, further relevant information from various sources is structured and clearly summarized in a separate box. This saves users further website visits. Background on the educational platform openHPI

As a pioneer among European scientific institutions, the Hasso Plattner Institute launched its interactive courses on 5 September 2012 – on the Internet platform https://open.hpi.de. Since then, it has offered free access to up-to-date university knowledge from the rapidly changing fields of information technology and innovation. So far, this has mainly been done in German and English. In autumn 2017, openHPI also offered the online translation and subtitling of a course in eleven world languages for the first time.

In the meantime, more than 1.1 million course registrations have been registered on openHPI. Around 315,000 people from 180 countries are currently part of the fixed user group on the platform. It grows daily. To date, the institute has issued more than 128,000 certificates for particularly successful participants in its “Massive Open Online Courses”, or MOOCs for short. The openHPI annual program includes numerous offers for IT beginners and experts. The more than 100 courses offered in the past can still be used in self-study – also free of charge.

Students can now also have credit points credited at their university for completing openHPI courses.
