Ausbildung: Vocational training in Germany

Vocational training in Germany is available for German and non-German citizens. We explain what vocational training is and how to get vocational training for non-EU internationals in Germany. Over 10 percent of all trainees in Germany already come from abroad. This proportion is expected to rise substancially in the near future.

Let us clarify the terms. Vocational training is called ‘Ausbildung’ in Germany. This usually is a short term for ‘Duale Berufsausbildung’ which means ‘Dual professional training’. We use all these terms here interchangeably.

Vocational training in Germany is open to all applicants worldwide. Whether you want to become a retail salesman, tiler, nurse, painter or mechatronics technician in Germany: Almost all companies are currently looking for new employees via Ausbildung. In general, there are over 320 different professions available for Ausbildung in Germany.

Where can I learn German for Ausbildung?

Today you can learn German online from the comfort of your own home. There are good and inexpensive providers for online lessons. For example, you can find German teachers worldwide through Superprof, or you can choose a language school in your home country to learn German up to level B1.

It is important that your lessons fit into your life rhythm: The number of hours and place of learning should fit your life, so that you can always concentrate on the lessons and there are never gaps in your learning.

Am I welcome in Germany as a foreigner for Ausbildung?

Around 10 percent of all trainees in Germany already come from abroad. This proportion is expected to rise even further. Many companies in Germany are dependent on trainees from abroad and are happy to provide them with in-company training.
