When you apply for a job or an apprenticeship in Germany, you should highlight your skills in many cases. What are skills, where should you mention them, and what skills for good jobs are in demand in 2023?
What are skills?
Skills are fundamental characteristics of a person that have often existed since childhood. Examples include work ethic, perseverance, stamina, flexibility, or enthusiasm. These skills are also called soft skills. Skills are to be distinguished from abilities. Skills are learned behaviors such as arithmetic, reading, typing quickly on a keyboard.
It is always best to emphasize skills / soft skills in your applications if you do not yet have any skills for the intended job.
Example 1: If you want to train as a roofer, but have no work experience or knowledge of the roofing trade, then you have no skills in this area. However, you can point out your skills such as: free from giddiness, flexible and able to work in a team.
Example 2: If you want to change professionally to a sales job, but you have no experience in sales, then you can also point out your skills such as: can argue convincingly, like to make phone calls, keep track of things.
Skills for good jobs 2023: What’s in demand?
In each job, of course, slightly different skills are in demand. For example, while you need to be good at communication and mental arithmetic as a salesperson, you need good instincts and organizational skills as a craftsman. Nevertheless, there are some skills that are in particularly high demand in the modern economy.
According to a current analysis, these skills in particular are in high demand at the moment:
- Communication skills
- Customer service
- Time management
- Project management
- Analytical thinking
- Ability to work independently
- Interpersonal skills
- Problem solving skills
- Attention to detail
One of the interesting things here is that several items relate to working in a team, namely communication skills, interpersonal skills, collaboration and project management. This shows what is really important to many employers today: that you, as a new employee or employees, fit in and can fit in.
Other skills such as analytical thinking, scheduling, innovation, flexibility or attention to detail are also important. But all of these points are only helpful if you can also fit into the operation. In plain English, you can be very innovative and able to work around the clock – but if you can’t coordinate your results well with others, they can be worthless to the company.
For you and your application, this can mean that you should therefore emphasize your communication and teamwork skills. It may therefore be worthwhile to place particular emphasis on clearly stating these points.
Top skill Communication: Important skills for good jobs
Communication skills are basically how we communicate with other people. Communication is the act of conveying information through speech sounds, signs, writing or behavior. It is not just something we do at work, but an integral part of every aspect of our lives.
In almost all professions, communication skills are enormously important as soft skills. Communication skills are the means by which we express and understand information. -They enable us to learn new things and communicate what we know to others. That’s why you’ll find this keyword in a large number of job postings. Excellent communication skills are not only needed as a salesperson, psychologist or manager. Even as a trainee, good communication skills are a must so that you can interact with other team members and help them understand what needs to be done faster.
The importance of communication skills can be measured by how they affect your professional and personal life. You can get a good job, you can keep your current job, you can score in exams and interviews, and you can even reduce the stress you experience in your work or personal life.
Top skill customer service
Another enormously important skill is customer service, often called “customer orientation” in Germany. Why is customer service important? We all have our favorite companies that we like to support and also pull money out of our wallets as often as possible. Amazon, Apple, and Starbucks are at the top of our list, not just because they’re good, but because we just love shopping there.
If the delivery didn’t arrive or if we ordered something online that wasn’t delivered or arrived damaged, we write a letter explaining what happened. But the difference between a good and bad company can be in that first message. A good company answers us the same day and tries to find a solution that satisfies us as a customer.
If you don’t want to mention the terms customer service and customer orientation directly in your application, you can note that you like to work for the success of a product or service and that you like to satisfy customers.
Top skill Scheduling
Scheduling is still one of the central tasks in many professions and jobs. Whether you are a tradesman or a middle or senior manager, deadlines are often the structure of your work and are correspondingly important. Now, it might be a little easy to write into your application that you are good at making and keeping appointments. It can be a bit more. It’s best if you name a few applications that you’ve used for scheduling before. Examples can be:
- Outlook calendar
- SAP calendar
- Salesforce calendar
- Doodle scheduling
- Koalendar Tool
- WordPress Plugins for appointment scheduling.
It’s also important to show your scheduling ability during the application process:
- Provide your contact information and a phone number that is always reachable, including all necessary area codes
- You can also indicate times when you are particularly available
- If the company is asking for three appointment proposals, then you should also submit three appointment proposals.
You can also proceed similarly to the other skills mentioned above, as shown here with the three examples. Of course, you do not have to address all points in your cover letter and/or CV. It is best to pick out the points that you think are most likely to be needed in the desired job.
What else should I take care of?
A pretty good strategy to get job offers could be to name the above mentioned top 15 skills for good jobs also specifically in your LinkedIn profile. This will help you get alerted to interesting job opportunities more often.
In case you get an invitation for an interview (be it in person or an online job interview) you should be able to give one or two examples which proof your skill levels.
